Background
Hope University College, Ethiopia’s first non-profit
college, was founded by Dr. Minas Hiruy in 2003 and
was established under the aegis of Hope Enterprises,
which leased and donated the 12.4 acres (five hectares)
of land on which the university college is being built. Its
ground was dedicated by the President of Ethiopia on
December 2, 2006. Located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s
capital and the seat of the Africa Union, the university
college was designed by Geluk en Treurniet Architecten,
a Dutch architectural firm, with all the important
features befitting an integrated campus. The university
college has a total foot print of 16,500 square meters
and shall start operation in September 2010.

Hope University College has a vision to be knowledge
and value based center of learning to positively impact
leadership for speedy socio-economic transformation of
Ethiopia.

Develop knowledgeable, articulate, innovative and all
rounded leaders, who can make a difference in the
development of Ethiopia and the rest of the Horn of
Africa within a community of academic excellence and
values maturity.

Objectives
- Develop highly competitive academic community where
there is focus on learning, inquiry, reflection, intense
pursuit of knowledge and intellectual achievement
that is marked not only by knowledge transfer and
ingestion but also by intelligence development.
- Develop internationally competitive professionals.
- Challenge students to confront their values,
attitudes
and behavior with an ethical spectacle that emphasizes
responsibility, personal integrity, public interest and
investment in the community.
- Link the students of the university college with the
community for mutual learning and progress.
Strategy of Instruction
Hope University College applies competency based
training within the context of student centered teaching.
In as much as the university college is set to develop
professionals that can readily and meaningfully engage
in the economy and in the society, it shall enable the
mastery of theoretical knowledge, applicable skills,
proficiency within actual work environment and
personal development.

Admission and Student Life
The university college shall target needy but bright
students on sponsorship basis. In order to augment
the financial capacity of the university college, some
students may be admitted on full fee basis. All students
must pass the college entrance examination of the
Ministry of Education to qualify for admission. A strong
student personal philosophy will be pursued challenging
the student to a level of personality development that
can positively impacts adult hood. Extra curricular
activities shall be used to develop student interest and
character and arouse curiosity. These activities will be
supervised to ensure impact and usefulness. Student
services will attend to student needs so that gaps in
that regard will not hamper learning.
The Academic
Program
The academic program of the university college is
tailored to help support the development of Ethiopia
by launching integrated knowledge in industrialization,
business management, environmental studies and social
science. In the initial phase there shall be the faculties of
- business and entrepreneurship,
- information and communication technology and
- science and technology.
During this period, the departments of business and
entrepreneurship, accounting and finance, information
technology, business information systems, industrial
technology and building construction technology shall be
offered. During subsequent years, other faculties shall
be added with disciplines in, for instance, environmental
science, public administration, urban management,
public policy and music being incorporated.
The university college shall offer a bachelor’s degree.
Teaching shall be emphasized in view of the motto
to develop leadership via on going faculty attention
and mentoring. A semester system is applied with an
academic year starting by mid September and ending
by mid July.
The university college shall have 2000 students at full
capacity and shall run day and evening classes.
