Hope University College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
needs English teachers
Hope University College (HUC), a new university accredited by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, has the vision “to provide aspiring leaders the option of pursuing a world-class education without leaving their country and cultural setting.” We are a values-based college, seeking staff who love God- and care about students. We are seeking volunteering faculty who are native speakers of English, to teach 3 English classes each. All classes have 25 students, with 3 classroom hours and a fourth hour using the Language Lab each week. The English curriculum includes Sophomore English, Professional Writing, and Communication and Presentation Skills. Each course includes reading, listening, speaking and vocabulary, as well as writing. Normally a Master’s degree in English, or Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language, is required, but for native speakers the Ministry may make allowances, especially if you have a Master’s in any subject. (At 7000 feet elevation, Addis is a cool but comfortable 70 degrees most of the time. No malarial medications are needed.)
For full-time foreign staff (4 classes), the salary is 7500 birr (about $500) per month and a small, furnished apartment is provided on campus. Full-time non-foreign staff are expected to live near the university. This allows time to help students with course difficulties and to be involved with student activities. For more information, contact Dr. Behailu (behailua@hotmail.com).
If you need to have a work permit (most non-Ethiopians do), a business visa and authentification of your highest degree are required to begin the process, before leaving for Ethiopia. (We can provide information.)
If necessary, financial assistance can be provided to help with the cost of air travel and required documents.
