Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a land of contrasts. Situated in the Horn of Africa, this vast land of resources has a beautiful landscape and a captivating history. However, Ethiopia is also a country that has not managed to snap out of poverty being counted among the poorest of countries. The population of 77 million has an average life expectancy of 47 years. Of this population, the majority are children affected by high child mortality and malnutrition. A sizable percent of children cannot go and/or complete school owing to poverty with over the majority of the population living on less than $2 a day. Adult literacy rate is about 40% and most people in these crushing conditions are trapped in a cycle of poverty having no hope.
